Charlton Middle School Grants Awarded

  • This Old Math House, The Ultimate Classroom Makeover: materials to implement student researched classroom learning environment improvements to create a more conducive atmosphere that supports diverse learning needs, and stimulates learning and engagement for 7th graders (2020)
  • Green Screen Studios: equipment to furnish two green screen studios, one for each middle school, that will be available for use by all students and staff (2020)
  • The Grizzly Store: 7th grade math students will receive materials needed to start a student run store (2019)
  • Creating a Lego Wall: the wall will provide opportunities for students to create, tinker, visualize, problem solve and more. From diagraming math, graphing outcomes of science experiments, to displaying historic scenes and more. (2018)
  • Spanish Escape Room: breakout EDU kit and accessories; using this spin-off of popular “escape rooms”, students must solve a series of puzzles and analyze clues in order to reach their goal. This promotes peer interaction and support in the areas of vocabulary, grammatical structure, reading comprehension, culture and communication. (2017)
  • Interactive World Geography Artifact Museum: labels, label maker, lockable display cases, 6 ipad mini4s with covers, starter “artifacts”. Students collect, label and catalogue world artifacts loaned to them by school and community members to enrich the Gr. 6 student or World Geography. Students are assigned artifacts to research and using applications such as augmented reality and Google Cardboard, they can show the artifacts being made or used. (2017)
  • Gamification of the Foreign Language Classroom: 25 mini2 ipads; Using game applications to address listening, reading, writing and speaking in a foreign language classroom. (2016)
  • Greenhouse Project: Greenhouse Kit, seedling pots, soil, seeds, gardening tools for grade 5 students to grow produce from seed in a Heavy-Duty Aluminum Greenhouse. Students sell produce and seedlings to the community to raise money for next year’s growing materials. Interdisciplinary between math, geography, history and language arts. (2016)
  • STEM Learning Lab: purchase 12 ipad3 minis, 4 document cameras and “Road to Mars” STEM unit.  Students use the engineering design process to produce a model of a land transportation vehicle for Mars then try to “market & sell” that vehicle.   Implements STEAM activities related to District’s strategic plan for all 5th graders. Made possible by a Karl Storz Grant (2015)
  • Teachnology for the 21st Century Student: Chromebooks and google management console licenses for use in 8th graded history and English classes. Students will use Google Documents to work within groups that are not seated within the same classroom. Utilize Quizlet.com, a differentiated vocabulary website where students access the weekly vocabulary which allows them to study, play games, and quiz themselves.  Play Historical Video Games which allow students the ability to compare and contrast the game to historical facts of that era.  Students will create video parodies for history and recreate scenes from their English Language Arts readings for project-based assessments using a video editing app. The Pixton App will allow students to create historical and literary graphic novels for differentiated instruction.   • 7th Grade STEM Pilot: 2 Interactive Response Systems, 2 document cameras, and related supplies to enhance science, math and other classroom instruction. Made possible by a Karl Storz Grant (2014)
  • 8th Grade STEM Pilot: 2 Interactive Response Systems, 2 document cameras, and related supplies to enhance science, math and other classroom instruction. Made possible by a Karl Storz Grant (2014)
  • Don't Tell Me You Can't program: 60 books and evening author presentation by Travis Roy. Program will be integrated into and become an extension of current curriculum related to Ann Frank (2014)
  • CMS Technology Education STEM Initiative: enhance grade 5 Technology Education classes with LEGO robotic kits. Students will be given design challenges, arrive at a solution(s) and then build and program their own LEGO robot. Made possible by a Karl Storz Grant (2013)
  • World Fair: Produce a World Fair at the end of the school year after students have studied World Fairs and their resulting inventions, new technology, architectural impacts, and foods. (2011)
  • Families in Focus & Fabric: study family structure and transfer that knowledge to items students create with photo transfers on material sewn into various family heirloom items (2011)
  • Math Review and Gifted Math Project: sharing of four iPads will further provide differentiated instruction in the upper grades (2011)
  • Folklore Performance: Shakespearian Productions work with 7th grade students in workshops and skits to learn performance techniques through a study of folklore (2010)
